someone directed me to some posts at a group that
se
es itself as "competing with the dcbg"...

and i have some comments...

i see alot of absolute nonsense and ignorance...

they make the claim dcbg has complained that
other p
eople have "copied the dcbg"...
this is nonsense, since many users of the group
have
always maintained there should be a bunch of
sites
like this and have no idea why there is not...

it is important to remember that the dcbg and the
pe
ople who comprise it, in general, are not a group
of
"volunteers trying to help"... in general,
members
/users are all people who need the resources and
inf
o and no one ever made a site... many of us come
up
with info on our own and figured we would leave
our
notes behind for those who would care to
follow...
the dcbg offers no product or service...

many of us wish someone else would do it because
we
are not website-makers or anything like that...
the dcbg is largely comprised of USERS, not
creators
 of anything...

but, since there are no sites with the kinds of
info
and resources we need, we sort of agreed to
start c
ollecting what each of us knew and have a sort of
me
eting place for those who continue looking to
compar
e notes...

after awhiloe, some of us have come to prefer te
"us
er group" format since sites invariably ar
flawed...
one person or a few peole decide wht info and
reso
urces are "worthy" where in a use group, all are
fre
e to add whatever they feel is important...
this leads to alot of stuff some people may not
be i
nterested in, but i, for one, prefer too much
stuff
than not enough...

the dcbg has accomplished alot because there was
no
one deciding what was important and what was
not...
the people who used the platform decided for
themse
lves...

not to mention, i have never seen a single post
comp
laining of someone "copying" the dcbg, so, the
point
is mistaken from the very start...

the organizer of the group mentions i make people
us
e the yahoo login at the dcbg...
this is not true...
there are a couple new non-dcbg-related things
being
done on my geocities webspace and i noticed alot
of
bandwidth seemed to be vanishing... upon
checking
my logs, i realized alot of people were using the
co
py of the login at my geocities webspace and i
took
it down with a link saying to use the login at
the g
roup, whch is just as bookmark-able as the one on
my
 space was...
why this person does not know this, i have no
idea..
.

on a personal note, i DO NOT run a dc site of any
ki
nd... i began storing some things in my personal
we
bspace because it was handy for the group and no
one
 else had done it...
amost always, it was explained this was not to be
a
permanent residence for the files... it needed
to b
e thrown somewhere, so, i threw it there...

in fact, most of what is being linked to in my
peson
al webspace is DEMO material, not finished
pojects..
.

the people complaining obviously know little
about w
hat they are complaining about...

further, the dcbg has never claimed to be the
creato
rs/owners of the yahoo login, in fact, it is
frequen
tly referred to as "curtis's yahoo login script"
sin
ce he originally adapted it for our use... i
note t
he vmu-based version is even labelled as such in
the
 dreamserv archive...

there are some complaints about the dcbg changing
li
nk url's or moving resources... that we "find
out p
eople are using them and try to stop them"...
this is also nonsense...
the resources are freely open and public... you
do
not have to be a member to use them, even... nor
do
 we even require credit...

perhaps this last bit of confusion comes from the
fa
ct that we often will ask for a link back from
anyon
e who uses info found here...
this is because of the large numbers of people
who h
ave tried to "play keep away" with the info and
try
to make themselves some kind of "info guru" that
peo
ple must go to...
most people that use the dcbg, i think, would
agree
it should ALL be free to all... therefore, if
someo
ne uses SOME info the group has, why not add a
link
to where they can find ALL of the info available?

as has often been the case, this is done by
people w
ho want to view their logs and pat themselves on
the
back for the amount of traffic they have or how
man
y members they can get...

the dcbg does not care how many people have used
the
resources there... membership is not required
and
most people who use the resources never even
join...

to say the dcbg tries to stop peoplefrom using
tings
housed there is totally ignorant... it is the
reas
on they are made public in the first place...

next, an allegation is made that the group
claimssom
e sort of rights to the info or that the dcbg
claims
before the group, nothing like it was attainable
by
 the users of dc browsers...
ludicrous...
this could have been done by anyone who started
coll
ecting, trying things, searching, etc...
what makes the dcbg unique is that it has
actulydone
 this...
n one can name a single site anything like it...
te suggestion is made that "anyone searching cud
hav
e found it"... that is the point... it has ben
all
brought to one place as a one-stop resource...
plu
s, many people using a dc for interntaccess are
new
to the web and not easily ablet find info on
their o
wn, which is why the dcbg dbles as a "web newbie"
so
rt of group...

plus, credit where credit is due, many things
heeARE
unique and could not be found elsewere beore the
dc
bg... a simple parousal of the faqs ad guides
will
demonstrate this...

but, none of this is the point...

the dcbg is in competition with no one...
it does not matter how many members there are,
how m
any posts are made, how many people use the
site...
the group has nothing to gain from being here...
he
nce, a competition is impossible even if it was
desi
red...

this is the formula that has been used a long tm
and
it has worked out quite well from the amont of
info
 and resources here...
